Cheap or Free Streaming Options

Say bye-bye to expensive streaming services

Have you “cut the cord” with cable TV, but find that your streaming costs are higher than you anticipated?

While popular streaming services like Netflix, Max, Disney Plus, and Hulu require paid subscriptions, there are a number of options available to you for free or a fraction of their cost.

Many are ad-supported, so if you’re willing to watch a few ads, you can save a bundle on the following options:

1. Tubi TV offers many free movies, some television shows and even some live streams of local news, sports and weather. You don’t have to sign up for the service. Just download the app to your streaming device.

2. Roku Channel is a free TV streaming service for people who own the company’s streaming devices and TVs, but it’s also available via Roku’s apps for your other devices. There are hundreds of live channels in addition to available on-demand content.

3. Once known as IMDb TV, Freevee is Amazon’s ad-supported streaming service that features a great deal of TV shows and movies. In addition, similar to the Roku channel, you can access live channels. Though the service’s initial focus was primarily on movie streaming, it’s now filled with TV shows too.

4. Got a library card? Check to see if your library has partnered with Hoopla. This digital-media service allows you to check out all kinds of stuff — from ebooks to movies to TV shows. An added bonus is that there are no commercials interrupting your shows! For more ways to use your library card check out this blog post.

5. Pluto TV is noteworthy for offering not only on-demand, free movie streaming, but also more than 250 live channels (including news, reality, sports, and more) thanks to its partnership with Paramount. One thing to note: If you’re watching a livestream, there’s no way to pause. You can only mute it.

We hope some of these options enhance your streaming experience. And if you are interested in alternatives to cable TV, our Tech Tutor Steve is especially knowledgeable about helping clients cut the cord with ease.
